Hand surgery and rehab are specialties. I hadn’t thought about how complex hands are, and what’s involved in fixing them. The surgeon put in a couple of pins and then told me all the things that could go right and wrong with the recovery. He also connected me with his top hand therapist, Margarita. She is a diminutive Columbian, but don’t mess with her and don’t be late to an appointment! She was actually delightful, as was her assistant Lisa. And she was very, very good. Over the course of 8 months I’ve regained most of the mobility and all the strength of that hand. It was a lot of work which seemed pointless for long periods of time when the progress was slow. She got me through the MRSA infection that set in after surgery and defied several antibiotics along the way. Margarita kept encouraging me and in the end it all paid off.
